Guidance on Chaperones
Last updated 28th February 2022
Introduction
- It is often necessary to perform intimate examinations and procedures on patients, and where possible this should be undertaken with verbal consent from either the patient or immediate next of kin if the patient is unable.
- Such examinations / procedures should be carried out with an appropriate member of staff acting as a chaperone.
Guidance
- If a chaperone is not immediately available, consider delaying the examination / procedure.
- A patient’s friend or family member is not an appropriate chaperone.
- Please record in the medical records verbal consent from the patient if obtained, or the name of next of kin as well as the name and grade of the chaperone.
