Early Cancer Diagnosis Clinic (ECDC)
Last updated 4th February 2022
General Principles
- The Early Cancer Diagnosis Clinic (ECDC) is set up primarily for GPs to refer patient with a suspicion of cancer who do not meet the criteria for one of the site-specific pathways.
- The ECDC is happy to accept referrals from secondary care if the patient falls into one of the following three categories
- You have been referred a patient with symptoms of cancer* and the patient is well enough to be investigated as an outpatient, in which case please discuss with ECDC whether referral is appropriate.
- You have admitted a patient who is well enough to be discharged home but has symptoms of possible cancer* which requires investigation please refer to ECDC.
- You have a patient who has had a scan which shows a cancer of unknown primary and is well enough to go home to wait for investigations/results, please refer to ECDC.
- The patient should be informed that there is a suspicion of cancer and they are being referred to the ECDC.
*unless symptoms are specific for another cancer pathway.
Investigations Required
- When referring a patient please ensure they have an FBC, U&E, LFT, Bone profiule, Immunoglobulins, CRP and HIV checked.
- For women please check Ca125 and for men PSA.
- All patients should also have a Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) performed. Test kits are available from Biochemistry on request.
